Hello! This is the home page for my Community Rotations.

My first Community rotation was with Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation.

September 8-November 24

Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation is an organization that brings various sports, arts and health programs to underserved schools. With over 100 sites SASF is one of the largest after-school programs in New York City. For my time there, I worked under my preceptor Shanon Morris. She recently became the head of the Sports and Wellness Department. What is interesting about her position is the combination of both athletics and nutrition. They recently rolled out a program entitled Food Explorers. The first trial of it was over the summer with 5 weeks of nutrition education. This Fall the education doubled to 10 weeks. Each lesson is 1 hour long and includes; education, exercise and fun tastings and recipes. Food Explorers is not the only thing that Shanon does. she directs many Sports and Wellness events such as Elect to be Fit, a day long sports and nutrition event held on Election day. She also manages various football and basketball leagues and sports teams. I truly enjoyed my experience at Sports and Arts and look forward to perhaps working in a similar field someday.

Hunter College Research with Dr. Leung

This was my second elective/community rotation. I worked with a community nutrition professor, Dr. May May Leung and her research team on various public health research. I was able to conduct literature reviews for a future research proposal. I also got to help develop content for an interactive comic health phone application for children in the local community. Additionally, I got some experience writing a blog post for the Food Policy Center at Hunter College. I truly feel that I grew in this rotation and got a very good taste for the research world.
