Working at St. Vincents garden in the West Village was a invaluable experience. I spent  growning seasons working in the garden, learning about urban agriculture, plants, herbs, people, the human experience, and myself.

As St. Vincent's budget wilted, so did the garden. John Canizzo of HSNY took it on as his project to help restore a neighborhood greenspace. While working at the awkwardly raise traingular garden I grew to understand people. As crudely as that may sound, that was precisely it.

As you scroll through this page, you will be able to see me in action.

As the site manager of St. Vincent's garden I was able to reach out to the local community and teach horticultural lessons for children at P.S. 41 and a local Brownie Troop 3041.

"Flower and Friends" Companion planting lessons for 1st and 2nd graders at P.S. 41 encouraged children to think about the dynamics of an ecosystem while learning organic farming practices. Lessons emphasized the connection between humans, plants, and animals.

"Tree Dectetives" A tree identification lesson was administered to Brownie Troop 3041 to encourage critical thinking skills, team work, and the ability to differentiate the wide variety of tree in New York City.

I also had the pleasure of piloting my own recreational gardening program at St. Vincents.

The target demographic was recovering addicts from Exponent's Recovering Annex. We were concerned with creating a relaxing enviornment and promoting self efficacy through recreational gardening.

Weekly visits to the garden were also supplemented by herbal workshops at the Exponents center using herbs that participants had grown.
