Activities / Assignments for the week: Participated in the New York City Food and Farm Bill Working Group. Participated in a webinar titled “Visualizing Health and the Farm Bill.” Participated in a planning meeting on the “Bodega Report Project” – a project that examines the environmental impact of bodegas in NYC. Attended a meeting with a political consulting firm to discuss how City Harvest can better engage state elected officials. Introduced to City Harvest team members working on a healthy school initiative. Read City Harvest’s strategic plan. Updated myself with City Harvest publications and resources.
Comments / Thoughts / What You Learned/ Challenges: This was an exciting week in which I was introduced to City Harvest and the projects that I will be involved in. There were a lot of introductions to City Harvest staff and outside organizations that I will be working with.

Activities / Assignments for the week: Participated in a presentation to members of the United Federation of Teachers on Breakfast in the Classroom. Updated City Harvest’s database of legislators. Participated in the New York City School Meals Coalition quarterly meeting. Attended the External Relations monthly staff meeting. Reviewed information about City Harvest’s nutrient dense policy.
Comments / Thoughts / What You Learned/ Challenges: During this week I became more familiar with how City Harvest engages in policy both to acquire funding from political representatives, to educate the public, and to best align themselves for political programs. I also became better acquainted with the Breakfast in the Classroom model for school breakfast and researched how it can be used to effectively decrease childhood hunger.

Activities / Assignments for the week: Participated in the NYC food and farm bill working group meeting and provided a nutrition perspective. Attended a Healthy Neighborhoods training meeting and learned how programming at City Harvest will change over the next five years to fall within the strategic plan. Attended a Fresh Bodega Bed Stuy meeting. Attended a meeting with New York University masters students who will be conducting research for City Harvest and some of its partner agencies to discover how Breakfast in the Classroom is being utilized by schools within NYC. Met with Kate to discuss Democracy in Action – an online tool utilized by City Harvest to send policy communications and advocacy alerts. Attended the SIPA launch party at Columbia University to introduce the Bodega Report project to students who will be working with City Harvest to conduct research on healthy bodegas in NYC.

Activities / Assignments for the week: Updated City Harvest’s internal monthly policy issues to post on the website. Developed communications for promoting the Brooklyn Food Conference amongst City Harvest’s agencies and supporters. Utilized the online program Democracy in Action to create a method in which City Harvest supporters can directly message their council members about food and nutrition policy messages sent out by City Harvest. Attended various webinars and read up on ways to best use Democracy in Action. Participated in a call with a consulting firm about capital requests. Conducted a listserv clean up in order to best match City Harvest’s agencies with their political representatives. Conducted a statistical analysis of City Harvest’s political communications to date and developed plans to increase advocacy action amongst City Harvest’s agencies. Met with City Harvest staff to brainstorm the best way to outreach to schools within City Harvest’s Healthy Neighborhoods to promote Breakfast in the Classroom.

Conducted internet research on organizations that do similar political communications to City Harvest. Reviewed community assessments in City Harvest’s healthy neighborhoods. Volunteered at the Washington Heights Farmers Market. Reviewed healthy corner store policies utilized across the U.S..Conducted an analysis of individuals taking political action through City Harvest and compiled their inforamtion into City Harvest’s database manager Razor’s Edge.
