Observational analysis paper.docx
Context:
I completed the Observational Analysis Paper in EDLIT735: The Survey of Instructional Approaches for Language and Literacy Development for students in Grades K-12 at Hunter College. Using multiple indicators and current research evidence I evaluated the instruction and instructional materials being used by a group of early learners. The use of Freeman and Freeman's Effective Reading Instruction Checklist was used to guide the evaluation of reading and writing instruction observations in the classroom.
Reflection:
It is evident that Freeman and Freeman Effective Reading Instruction checklist is indeed effective. Through many observations of classroom reading and writing time and throughout this analysis of my own reading instruction it is clear that students need many opportunities to engage with text that is culturally relevant so they can apply the background knowledge and connect their life experiences with the text. Readers must be able to connect with the text in order to understand what is being read so they can make meaning and value reading. Through teacher demonstrations of reading aloud, students can become familiar with how language works and therefore, will be able to engage in reading books independently. It is imperative to have a wide variety of reading materials for readers to choose from so they can see that reading has a purpose and can value themselves as readers. I will be sure to utilize Freeman and Freeman's checklist when planning lessons to assure a meaningful and engaging reading and writing activity.
