Expository Text Demonstration Lesson and Coaching Assignment.docx

Context:

In this assignment we had to develop a lesson in which a reading strategy fosters comprehension with an expository text.  Various instructional approaches were considered when planning the lesson including, the physical environment, routines, classroom configuration, variety of texts, delivery of material.

Reflection:

After studying and reading Fountas and Pinnell’s Literacy Beginnings it is clear what a classroom environment needs to support language development and to be more engaging for the children.  Assigned reading spots during whole group instruction ensures a smooth transition from one activity to the next.  The children also have their own space to move about, focus and participate during activities and lessons.  Peer feedback is a routine the students become familiar with when assigned a turn and talk partner.  All of these suggestions from Fountas and Pinnell are routines that I set in my classroom.  Accessing students’ background knowledge is incorporated into the lesson to aide comprehension.
