Growth Artifact

This artifact should provide evidence of your growth in competency and effectiveness as a literacy educator or a leader of literacy education. To illustrate your growth and change, you will need to upload at least two artifacts, with one baseline evidence and one post-baseline evidence, such as two lesson plans, or two observation reports from your supervisor, or two assessment reports of a student. Post-baseline evidence must be related to baseline evidence. The difference between the two documents should illustrate your growth and accomplishments.

The artifact needs to be accompanied by an artifact tag which includes:

  • Context in which the artifact was created
  • Explanation of the growth and development
  • Reflection of factors that contributed to the growth and development

Letter of Self Evaluation.docx

Context:

The baseline evidence was created in EDLIT 742, for an assignment that involved being observed by my professor and a discussion of things she noticed during a literacy lesson.  The post- baseline evidence was created in the same course, but towards the end of the semester, after we had the opportunity to self-evaluate our performance in the classroom.  We used our self evaluation as an innovation tool to better our instructional approach.

Explanation:

I found there to be a gap between what I did and what other colleagues discussed they did to engage their students with rich literature.  Then it became clear to me during our post-visit discussion that I needed to step outside of my comfort zone and slightly change my lessons and thematic units to make them more literacy rich without dramatically changing the school’s PreK curriculum completely.  In the video exchange it is evident that I take these risks in engaging the children.  I invite the children to act out the story and their eagerness to participate provides the evidence of my growth in competency and effectiveness as a literacy educator.

Reflection:

I used these two work samples to illustrate my growth and change in competency and effectiveness because the risks that I take to step outside of my comfort zone in order to better my instructional delivery for my students is evident in the video exchange project.  By implementing the reading activities that were shared by Professor Hu, I found a new kind of participation and eagerness from my students.  Each student was interested in becoming a part of the story by acting it out.  I will continue incorporating these activities in my lesson plans in order to complete the task with confidence.
